Standing & Stagnant Water
Back to the Enforcement Division page
In July of 2003, the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury Council passed by-law 2003-053 to regulate standing and stagnant water within the Municipality.
Under this by-law it is an offence to:
- Keep a swimming pool, hot tub, wading pool, or artificial pond unless it is maintained in good repair and working condition;
- Permit a depression, excavation, swimming pool, hot tub, wading pool, artificial pond or debris located on a property to contain standing water for a period in excess of four (4) days.
- Cause or permit standing or stagnant water on a property.
For your information, standing water may be found in the following locations on your property:
Birdbaths, boat covers, pool covers, tree holes, flat top roofs, tire and tire swings, unchlorinated pools, empty buckets, wheelbarrows and pots, eaves troughs and rain gutters, sump pumps, small boats and canoes, plastic covers on law chairs, lawn furniture, outdoor equipment, plastic greenhouse covering, storm water management ponds, retention or detention ponds, rain barrels, unused motor vehicles and similar vehicles, trailers and recreational and playground equipment, yard refuse and debris including empty water and fuel tanks, plastic containers and bottles, catch basins and manholes and ponds.
Standing and Stagnant Water By-law
One of the major reasons this by-law was passed was concerns relating to "West Nile Virus" and the possibility that standing water provides a breeding environment for mosquitoes.
The following link to the Simcoe Muskoka Health District Health Unit will give you details on West Nile Virus with respect to personal protection and frequently asked questions. In addition, they provide information relating to surveillance and mosquito control within Simcoe County.
