Qualifications of Electors

Subsection 17(2) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, as amended provides Qualification of Electors as follows:
A person entitled to be an elector at an election held in a local municipality if, on voting day, he or she,
* resides in the local municipality or is the owner or tenant of land there, or the spouse or same-sex partner of such owner to tenant;
* is a Canadian citizen;
* is at least 18 years old; and
* is not prohibited from voting under subsection (3) or otherwise by law.
Proof of identification will be required at the voting place.
Examples of acceptable photo identification are Driver's Licence, Canadian Passport, Canadian Citizenship Card, University, College or Student Card, Military Card, Certificate of Indian Status, FireArms Certificate. A Birth Certificate, Notice of Birth, Marriage Certificate, Baptismal Certificate, and Seniors Card are also acceptable documents for identification.
Acceptable identification confirming Canadian Citizenship are Birth Certificate, Notice of Birth, Canadian Citizenship Card or Canadian Passport.
Permanent Residency Cards are not issued to Canadian Citizens.
